Introduction

In this exercise, you will be asked to comment on and correct example sentences taken from student essays.
Step 1: identify errors in a sentence
Step 2: re-write the sentence
Step 3: listen to two tutors discussing the sentence
Step 4: compare with a sample answer


Objectives

This exercise is designed to help you edit your own writing for errors in sentence structure, style and vocabulary choice.

The essay title was given as follows:

What do you understand the role of Applied Linguistics to be in the real world?

Include discussion of at least one of the real-world problems identified in Texts 2-4, Cook 2003, considering how Applied Linguistics could be used to investigate this/these problem(s).
